Abū Jamra al-Dubaʿī said: “I used to sit with Ibn ʿAbbās in Makkah. When I developed a fever, he said, ‘Cool it with Zamzam water, for Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Fever is from the scorching heat of Hell, so cool it with water”—or he said, “with Zamzam water.”’” (1)
Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ansārī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Zamzam water is for whatever purpose it is drunk.’” (2)
It is also reported from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to carry Zamzam water and related that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to carry it. Abū ʿĪsā said: “This is a fair, singular hadith; we know it only through this route.” (3)
(1) Authentic: Narrated by al-Bukhārī (3261) and Ahmad (2644).
(2) Weak: Narrated by Ahmad (14435, 14578). Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: “Abd Allah ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn al-Muammil narrated to us, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir…” This chain is weak. Regarding Abd Allah ibn al-Walīd ibn Maymūn, Abū Zura said, “Truthful,” while Abū Hātim said, “His hadith may be recorded, but it may not be used as proof.” Abū Ahmad ibn Adī said: “I have not seen anything objectionable in his hadith worth mentioning.” End quote. Ibn Hibbān listed him in *al-Thiqāt* (The Trustworthy Narrators) and said: “His hadith is sound.” Al-Bukhārī cited him in supporting narrations in his *Sahīh* and narrated from him in *al-Adab al-Mufrad*. He is therefore truthful but prone to error. His teacher, Abd Allah ibn al-Muammil ibn Wahb Allah, was weak and had a poor memory. Abd Allah ibn al-Walīd was corroborated in this narration by al-Walīd ibn Muslim in Ibn Mājah (3062), but this corroboration is of no avail because Ibn al-Muammil is weak. Moreover, al-Walīd did not explicitly state that he heard it from Ibn al-Muammil, and he practiced both *tadlīs* (obscuring a chain’s continuity) and *taswiya* (concealing a weak intermediary).
(3) Weak: Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (963), who said: “Abū Kurayb narrated to us; Khallād ibn Yazīd al-Jufī narrated to us; Zuhayr ibn Muāwiya narrated to us, from Hishām ibn Urwa, from his father, from Aisha…” This chain is weak. Ibn Hibbān listed Khallād ibn Yazīd al-Jufī al-Kūfī in *al-Thiqāt* and said: “He sometimes erred.” Only this hadith and one other, recorded by Ibn Khuzayma in his *Sahīh*, are known from him. Al-Bukhārī said: “No one corroborated him in this narration.”
