Secondly: Reports concerning general ruqyah for ailments such as illness, fever, and similar conditions that may also result from the evil eye in the person subjected to envy, for the evil eye can cause fever, seizures, and illness:

Abū ʿAbd Allāh ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀs (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he complained to Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) of pain in his body. Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) told him: “Place your hand on the part of your body that hurts and say three times, ‘In the name of Allah.’ Then say seven times, ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s might and power from the evil of what I feel and fear.’” (1)

Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Gabriel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, “Muhammad, are you ill?” He replied, “Yes.” Gabriel said, “In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you against everything that harms you, against the evil of every soul or the eye of an envier. May Allah heal you. In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you.” (2)

Thirdly: Reports concerning treatment through supplication, which is distinct from ruqyah:

Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqās (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me while I was ill and said, ‘O Allah, heal Saʿd. O Allah, heal Saʿd. O Allah, heal Saʿd.’” (3)

Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If anyone visits a sick person whose appointed time has not yet come and says seven times, ‘I ask Allah the Magnificent, Lord of the Magnificent Throne, to heal you,’ Allah will cure that person of the illness.” (4)

He also reported (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon a Bedouin to visit him during his illness. Whenever he visited someone who was ill, he would say, “No harm; it is a purification, Allah willing.” (5)

What Has Been Reported Concerning the Disapproval of Hanging Written Material on a Child:

Hanging on a child something written containing ruqyah formulas or passages from the Quran is classified as the use of amulets. Such amulets are forbidden according to the sounder of the two scholarly opinions. I shall therefore not dwell upon the evidence, as I have examined it fully in my book Treatment
