In another report, ʿĀ’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) also said: “I used to perform ruqyah for Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) against the evil eye, (placing my hand upon his chest and saying), ‘Remove the affliction, Lord of mankind. In Your hand is healing; none can remove it but You.’” (1)
In the hadith of Zaynab, the wife of ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with them both), she said: “Whenever ʿAbdullāh returned from an errand and reached the door, he would clear his throat and spit, because he disliked taking us by surprise and coming upon something he would dislike. One day he returned and cleared his throat while an elderly woman was with me, performing ruqyah for erysipelas. I hid her beneath the bed. He entered, sat beside me, and noticed a thread around my neck. He asked, ‘What is this thread?’ I replied, ‘A thread over which ruqyah has been performed for me.’ He took it, cut it, and then said, ‘The household of ʿAbdullāh has no need of shirk. I heard Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Ruqyah, amulets, and love charms are shirk.”’ I asked him, ‘Why do you say this? My eye used to discharge, so I would regularly visit a certain Jewish man to have him perform ruqyah for it, and whenever he did so, it would subside.’ He replied, ‘That was merely the work of Satan. He would prick it with his hand, and whenever ruqyah was performed over it, he would stop. It would have sufficed for you to say what Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Remove the affliction, Lord of mankind. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing—a healing that leaves no illness behind.”’” (2)
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Suhayb reported: “Thābit al-Bunānī and I visited Anas ibn Mālik. Thābit said, ‘Abū Hamza, I am ill.’ Anas said, ‘Shall I perform for you the ruqyah of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Anas then said, ‘O Allah, Lord of mankind, Remover of affliction, heal. You are the Healer; there is no healer but You. Grant healing that leaves no illness behind.’” (3)
