Treatment with Ruqyah
First: Ruqyah specifically reported for treating the evil eye and envy
Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī reported that Gabriel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, “O Muhammad, are you ill?” He replied, “Yes.” Gabriel then said, “In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you against everything that harms you, against the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you. In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you.” (1)
A sincere person should therefore place his right hand upon the head of the person afflicted by envy, pass it over him, and say, “In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you…” continuing to the end of the invocation. The evidence for using the right hand is the hadith of ‘Ā’isha (may Allah be pleased with her), who reported that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked protection for a member of his family, he would pass his right hand over them and say, “O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing—a healing that leaves no illness behind.” Agreed upon.
She also reported that whenever Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) visited a sick person, or one was brought to him, he would say, “Remove the affliction, Lord of mankind. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing—a healing that leaves no illness behind.” Recorded by al-Bukhārī.
The ruqyah formulas in this regard are numerous, and the practitioner may memorize whichever of them he wishes. The relevant hadiths include the following:
‘Ā’isha, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reported that whenever Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, Gabriel would perform ruqyah for him, saying, “In the name of Allah, may He restore you to health and cure you of every illness, and protect you from the evil of an envier when he envies and from the evil of every evil eye.” (2)
‘Ā’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) also reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ruqyah, saying, “Remove the affliction, Lord of mankind. In Your hand is healing; none can remove it but You.” (3)
