Zirr ibn Hubaysh reported: I came to Medina and met Ubayy ibn Ka‘b. I said to him, “Abū al-Mundhir, I have seen that Ibn Mas‘ūd does not write the two surahs of refuge in his copy of the Quran.” He replied, “By Him Who sent Muhammad with the truth, I asked Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) about them, and no one other than you has asked me about them since I asked him. He said, ‘I was told, “Say,” so I said it. Therefore, say it yourselves.’ Thus, we say as Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said.” (1)
Abd al-Rahmān ibn Yazīd reported: Abdullah used to scrape the two surahs of refuge out of his copies of the Quran, saying, “They are not part of the Book of Allah—Blessed and Exalted is He.” Al-A‘mash said: ‘Āsim also narrated to us from Zirr, from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, who said: “We asked Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) about them. He said, ‘I was told to recite, and I recited.’” (2)
Al-Baydāwī stated in his tafsīr: Al-Bazzār said, “None of the Companions concurred with Ibn Mas‘ūd. It has been authentically established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited both surahs in prayer, and they were included in the Quranic codex.” End quote.
