Indeed, in that there is surely mercy and a reminder for people who believe.’ (51) [al-Ankabūt: 51] Whoever is not healed by the Quran, may Allah not heal him; and whoever does not find the Quran sufficient, may Allah not suffice him.” End quote. (1)
Treatment with the Quran is established by the Book and the Sunnah, and the Muslim community is unanimously agreed upon it. In the present discussion of envy, appropriate treatments include the two surahs of refuge and the recitation of the final two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah.
Abū Masūd al-Badrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever recites the final two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” (2)
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The correct interpretation is that they suffice him against anything harmful. It has also been said that they suffice in place of performing the night prayer, but this view is untenable.” (3)
The hadiths concerning healing recitations using the two surahs of refuge are well known and numerous. Among them are the following:
The Hadith of Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her)
Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that whenever Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill, he would recite the two surahs of refuge over himself and blow lightly. When his pain became severe, I would recite them over him and pass his own hand over his body, hoping for the blessing of the two surahs. (4)
The Hadith of Uqbah ibn Āmir (may Allah be pleased with him)
Uqbah ibn Āmir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Verses were revealed to me tonight the like of which has never been seen: ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,’ and ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of humankind.’” (5)
