ill effects remaining. (1)
Al-Tabarānī also transmitted the hadith describing the washing with a sound chain as far as al-Zuhrī. It states: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī said, “The washing procedure that we found our scholars practicing is as follows: The man who cast the evil eye upon his companion is brought a vessel containing water, which is held up for him above the ground. He puts his right hand into the water and pours water once over his face, letting it fall into the vessel. He then puts his left hand into the water and washes his right hand once over the vessel. Next, he puts his right hand into the water and washes his left hand once, up to the elbow, over the vessel. He then puts both hands into the water and washes his chest once over the vessel. Next, he puts his left hand into the water, scoops some up, and pours it once over the back of his right hand, letting it fall into the vessel. He then puts his left hand into the water and pours it once over his right elbow into the vessel while bending his arm toward his neck. He does the same to his left elbow. He then does the same to the top of his right foot, beginning at the bases of the toes, and likewise to the left foot. Next, he puts his left hand into the water and pours it over the back of his right knee, then does the same to the left knee. He then dips the right inner portion of his waist-wrapper into the water. The man holding the vessel then rises with it and pours it over the back of his right knee. The man holding the vessel then rises with it and pours it over the head of the person affected by the evil eye from behind, after which he overturns the vessel face down on the ground behind him.” (2)
The relevant evidence is his statement, “He then dips the right inner portion of his waist-wrapper into the water…” If Ibn Mujamma accurately preserved this wording from al-Zuhrī in the preceding narration, then the inner portion of the waist-wrapper can only mean its right edge,
