Shaykh Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jibrīn—may Allah preserve him—said:
The signs that appear in a person afflicted by the evil eye: There is no doubt that affliction by the evil eye has recognizable indications and outward signs. These may become apparent when a person or property possesses qualities that distinguish him or it from others, and then something suddenly occurs that alters those qualities—such as illness, swelling, breakage, a traffic accident, or the like. A person afflicted by the evil eye may be affected in his vision if he has keen eyesight, in his endeavors if he is especially industrious, or in his abundant and valuable wealth, which may suffer damage, stagnation, or destruction. The same may befall his luxurious car, imposing mansion, beautiful wife, many children, or the like. Thus, unexpected death, collapse, destruction, breakdown, or similar harm may occur. If he falls ill and goes to hospitals, medical examinations and tests may find him sound and healthy, while doctors remain unable to identify his ailment—even though he suffers seizures in their presence and experiences pain whose cause they cannot determine. He is then treated with ruqya and the other means used to treat one afflicted by the evil eye, and he recovers by Allah’s permission. It is then said that he had been struck by the eye of an envious person and that its effect was removed through the means employed by Quran reciters and practitioners of prescribed ruqya. (1)
