- In al-Mustadrak, it is narrated from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf that Āmir ibn Rabīah, a man from Banū Adī ibn Kab, saw Sahl ibn Hunayf bathing at al-Kharrār while accompanying the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said, “By Allah, I have never seen the like of what I have seen today—not even the skin of a maiden kept in seclusion.” Sahl was immediately struck down and fell. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was told, “O Messenger of Allah, will you see to Sahl ibn Hunayf?” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, summoned Āmir ibn Rabīah, became angry with him, and said, “Why does one of you kill his brother or companion? Why did you not invoke a blessing? Perform the washing for him.” Āmir performed the washing for him, whereupon Sahl went on his way with nothing wrong with him.
The washing is performed as follows: a cup containing water is brought. The washer puts both hands into the cup and pours water from it over his face. He then washes his right hand and elbow over the cup, dips his hand into it and washes his back, then takes water with his left hand and does the same. Next, he washes his chest over the cup, then his right knee and the tips of his toes; he does the same with the left leg and dips the inner fold of his waist-wrapper into it. He then covers the cup before setting it on the ground, scoops some water from it, rinses his mouth, and pours some of the water over his face. He then pours it over his head and casts the cup behind him. This report is extremely weak. (1)
(1) Very weak: Narrated by al-Hākim in al-Mustadrak (hadith no. 5741), through al-Jarrāh ibn al-Minhāl, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Umāmah. Al-Hākim said: “The two Shaykhs—al-Bukhārī and Muslim—may Allah have mercy on them both, agreed upon narrating this hadith in an abridged form.” This was one of his errors, may Allah have mercy on him, for neither of them narrated it. Regarding al-Jarrāh, Ibn Abī Hātim said: “I heard my father say: ‘His reports are abandoned; he is discredited in hadith, and his reports are not to be recorded.’” In his work on abandoned narrators, Ibn Hibbān said: “Al-Jarrāh ibn al-Minhāl al-Jazarī, whose kunyah was Abū al-Atūf, was an evil man who drank wine and lied in hadith transmission. I heard al-Hanbalī say that Ahmad ibn Zuhayr reported Yahyā ibn Maīn as saying: ‘The hadith of Abū al-Atūf al-Jarzī is worthless.’” This man was the judge of Harrān—how closely the present resembles the past! Al-Hākim himself sought to excuse the weakness of this narration, saying: “As for al-Jarrāh ibn al-Minhāl, he is Abū al-Atūf al-Jazarī and does not meet the criteria of authenticity. I included this hadith only to explain how the washing is performed. It is an extremely gharīb (singular) report with a chain traced back to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
