Ibn Abī Shaybah said: Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Zakariyyā, from Āmir, who said: Ibn Masūd saw his son wearing an amulet against fever, so he cut it off and said, “There is no incantation except against the evil eye or venom.” (1)

The hadith master Ibn Asākir narrated through the hadith master Khaythamah ibn Sulaymān, who said: Ubayd ibn Muhammad al-Kashūrī narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd Rabbih al-Basrī narrated to us, from Abū Rajā, from Shubah, from Abū Ishāq, from al-Hārith, from Alī, may Allah be pleased with him, that Gabriel came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and found him distressed. He asked, “O Muhammad, what is this distress I see upon your face?” He replied, “Al-Hasan and al-Husayn have been afflicted by the evil eye.” Gabriel said, “Affirm the reality of the evil eye, for it is real. Why have you not sought protection for them with these words?” He asked, “What are they, Gabriel?” He replied, “Say: O Allah, Possessor of supreme authority and everlasting bounty, Possessor of the noble Countenance, Master of the perfect words and answered supplications, preserve al-Hasan and al-Husayn from the evil eyes of the jinn and the eyes of human beings.” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said these words, and they arose and began playing before him. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said, “Seek protection for yourselves, your wives, and your children with this formula, for those seeking protection have never sought it with anything comparable.” (2)

Al-Rabāb, the grandmother of Uthmān ibn Hakīm, reported: I heard Sahl ibn Hunayf say, “We passed by a stream, so I entered it and bathed in it, but emerged feverish. This was reported to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, ‘Tell Abū Thābit to seek protection.’ I asked, ‘My master, are incantations beneficial?’ He replied, ‘There is no incantation except against the evil eye, venom, or a bite.’ Affān’s wording was: ‘the evil glance, the bite, and the venom.’” (3)
