al-Ayn HaqqMuhammad ibn Abd al-Mu'ti

against the evil eye? What are washīq and “may it cling to his wealth” supposed to mean?

His words, “I have turned the eye of the one who cast it back upon him and upon the person dearest to him.” What sin has the person dearest to him committed? Allah Most High says, “No soul earns except against itself, and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another” (al-Anām, 6:164). He also says, “No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another, and man shall have nothing except what he strives for” (al-Najm, 53:38–39).

The verse is being cited for something for which it was not revealed and with no relevant connection. The sight mentioned in the verse is not the sight of the evil-eye caster, as the apparent line of reasoning would suggest.

If it is assumed that the “barrier” is one of the jinn and that this is an invocation addressed to it and an appeal for its aid besides Allah Most High, then this is polytheism—we seek refuge in Allah from that.

There is no incantation anywhere in the world that does this to an envious person. The utmost achieved through beneficial incantations is for Allah Most High to restore the person afflicted by the evil eye—or the envied person—to health without the evil-eye caster suffering harm! Once you understand this, the purpose for which this tale was fabricated becomes clear. How many an innovated formula of remembrance has had fabricators attribute to it benefits, reward, and merit that they do not attribute even to the words of Allah Most High or those of His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace! Allah controls all affairs, before and after.

Relying on this story as a whole as evidence can stem only from laxity and ignorance of foundational principles. Do not hesitate to reject it, even if the person transmitting it is thought to be a scholar. Everyone’s words may be accepted or rejected except those of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Whoever seeks guidance in the Sunnah, Allah Most High will suffice him in whatever concerns him and set all his affairs aright.

  • The hadith of Hābis al-Tamīmī, may Allah be pleased with him.

Hayyah ibn Hābis al-Tamīmī reported that his father told him that he had heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: “There is no truth to superstitions concerning owls; the evil eye is real; and the truest of omens is a good omen.” (1)

(1) Weak: Narrated by Ahmad and al-Tirmidhī (2061). Hayya ibn Hābis is deemed acceptable. The hadith was transmitted from Yahyā ibn Abī Kathīr in conflicting forms, none of which can be preferred over the others, as noted previously.
