al-Ayn HaqqMuhammad ibn Abd al-Mu'ti

Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) also reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Most of those among my nation who die do so—after what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has written, decreed, and predestined—because of the evil eye.”

Abū Dāwūd al-Tayālisī and al-Bazzār explained, “That is, the evil eye.” (1)

Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) also reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Moreover, the evil eye indeed sends a man to the grave and a camel to the cooking pot.” (2)

(1) Hasan: Recorded by al-Tayālisī (1760), Ibn Abī Āsim in *al-Sunnah* (311)—whose wording is cited here—al-Bukhārī in *al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr*, al-Bazzār in his *Musnad*, and Ibn Adī in *al-Kāmil fī al-Duafā* (4/119), hadith no. 964. All of them transmitted it through Tālib ibn Habīb ibn Amr—also known as Ibn al-Dajī—from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Jābir ibn Abd Allah, from his father, who attributed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Its narrators are trustworthy. Al-Haythamī said in *Majma al-Zawāid* (5/106): “Its narrators are among those of the Sahīh collections, except Tālib ibn Habīb ibn Amr, who is trustworthy.” Ibn Adī said in *al-Kāmil*: “Tālib ibn Habīb ibn Amr ibn Sahl ibn Qays al-Ansārī—his grandfather was buried beside Hamzah—is open to question. I heard Ibn Hammād relate this from al-Bukhārī. […] We hope that there is nothing wrong with him.” Among contemporary scholars, Shaykh al-Albānī (may Allah have mercy on him) graded the hadith hasan in *al-Sahīhah* and *Sahīh al-Jāmi*. (2) Hasan: Al-Qudāī recorded it in *Musnad al-Shihāb* (1057–1058) through two routes from Shuayb ibn Ayyūb al-Sarīfīnī, who said: “Muāwiyah ibn Hishām narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir.” This is a good chain, particularly when used as corroborating evidence. Al-Dāraqutnī and Ibn Hibbān declared Shuayb ibn Ayyūb al-Sarīfīnī trustworthy. Ibn Hibbān said: “He served as judge of Wāsit. He made errors and practiced tadlīs; whenever he narrated, objectionable reports involving tadlīs appeared in his hadiths.” I say: Here, however, he explicitly states that he heard it directly. Regarding his teacher Muāwiyah ibn Hishām, Ibn Shāhīn cited the following in *al-Thiqāt*: Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah said, “Muāwiyah ibn Hishām is a truthful man, but he is not an authority.” Al-Sājī said, “He was truthful but made mistakes.” Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, “He made many errors.” Ibn Sad said, “He was truthful and narrated many hadiths.” Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī said in *al-Duafā*: “Muāwiyah ibn Hishām—also said to be Muāwiyah ibn Abī al-Abbās—narrated material that he had not heard, so they abandoned him.” Al-Hāfiz Ibn Hajar said in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb* (10/218): “I read in al-Dhahabī’s handwriting: ‘This is an error by Abū al-Faraj; no one abandoned him.’ I say: He was therefore truthful, though prone to error. Muslim and the compilers of the Sunan collections included his narrations.” Ibn Kathīr cited it through this route from the hadith master Muhammad ibn al-Mundhir al-Harawī, known as Shakkar, in his book *al-Ajāib*. Ibn Kathīr said: “This chain consists entirely of trustworthy narrators, though it was not recorded in the major collections.” This is quoted from his *Tafsīr*. Al-Suyūtī attributed it to Abū Nuaym in *al-Hilyah*, and al-Albānī (may Allah have mercy on him) graded it hasan in *Sahīh al-Jāmi* (4144). Al-Qudāī then recorded it in *Musnad al-Shihāb* (1059) through Alī ibn Abī Alī al-Lahabī, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir. This chain is extremely weak. Ibn Kathīr also cited it through this route from the hadith master Muhammad ibn al-Mundhir al-Harawī, known as Shakkar, in *al-Ajāib*, with the following wording: “The evil eye is real: it indeed sends a man to the grave and a camel to the cooking pot, and most deaths among my nation are due to the evil eye.” Ibn Hibbān said in *al-Majrūhīn* (2/107), biography no. 679: “Alī ibn Abī Alī al-Lahabī, a descendant of Abū Lahab, narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, and Muhammad ibn Iyād al-Makkī narrated from him. He is counted among the people of Medina. He transmits fabricated and inverted reports from trustworthy narrators, and it is impermissible to rely on him as evidence. He narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The evil eye indeed sends a camel to the cooking pot and a man to the grave.’” It has a corroborating report from Asmā bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Half the graves dug for my nation are due to the evil eye.’” This report provides no usable corroboration, however, for al-Haythamī said in *Majma al-Zawāid* (5/106): “Al-Tabarānī narrated it, but its chain contains Alī ibn Urwah al-Dimashqī, who was a liar.”
