Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahmān narrated: I was with Saīd ibn Jubayr when he asked, “Which of you saw the star that shot across the sky last night?” I replied, “I did.” I then added, “I was not praying; rather, I had been stung.” He asked, “What did you do?” I replied, “I sought treatment through a healing recitation.” He asked, “What led you to do that?” I said, “A hadith related to us by al-Shabī.” He asked, “What did al-Shabī relate to you?” I replied, “He narrated to us from Buraydah ibn al-Husayb al-Aslamī, who said: ‘A healing recitation is warranted only for the evil eye or a venomous sting.’” He said, “Whoever acts upon what he has heard has done well. However, Ibn Abbās narrated to us that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“The nations were presented before me. I saw a prophet accompanied by a small band, another prophet accompanied by one or two men, and another prophet with no one accompanying him. Then a vast multitude was shown to me, and I thought that they were my nation. But I was told, ‘This is Moses (peace be upon him) and his people. Look instead toward the horizon.’ I looked and saw a vast multitude. I was then told, ‘Look toward the other horizon.’ There, too, was a vast multitude. I was told, ‘This is your nation, and among them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment.’”
He then rose and entered his home. The people began discussing those who would enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. Some said, “Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” Others said, “Perhaps they are those who were born into Islam and never associated any partners with Allah.” They mentioned various other possibilities. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then came out to them and asked, “What are you discussing?” They told him, and he said, “They are those who do not recite healing invocations over others, do not ask others to recite them over them, do not take omens, and place their trust in their Lord.” Ukkāshah ibn Mihsan stood and said, “Pray to Allah to make me one of them.” He replied, “You are one of them.” Another man then stood and said, “Pray to Allah to make me one of them.” He replied, “Ukkāshah has preceded you to it.” (1)
Ibn Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah Most High bless him and his family and grant them peace) used to seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, saying, “I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every venomous creature, and every evil eye that afflicts.” He would also say, “This is how Abraham used to seek protection for Isaac and Ishmael (peace be upon them both).” (2)
