al-Ayn HaqqMuhammad ibn Abd al-Mu'ti

“Am I one of them, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Yes.” Another man then stood and asked, “Am I one of them?” He replied, “Ukkāshah has preceded you to it.” (1)

  • The Hadith of Ibn Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him).

Ibn Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The evil eye is real. If anything could outstrip the divine decree, the evil eye would outstrip it. If you are asked to wash, then wash.” (2)

Ibn Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The evil eye is real; the evil eye is real—it can bring down a lofty mountain.” (3)

(1) Authentic: Recorded by al-Bukhārī under the chapter “Those Who Undergo Cauterization or Cauterize Others, and the Merit of Those Who Do Not Undergo Cauterization,” through Muhammad ibn Fudayl, as a *mawqūf* report (attributed only to the Companion). It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd (3884) and Ahmad (19407, 19428, 19508) through Mālik ibn Mighwal; and by al-Tirmidhī (2057) and al-Humaydī in his *Musnad* (871), in my critical edition, through Sufyān ibn Uyaynah. Both Mālik and Sufyān transmitted it from Husayn, from Āmir al-Shabī, from Imrān ibn Husayn, as a *marfū* report (attributed to the Prophet), and its chain is authentic. Mālik and Sufyān differed from Hushaym and al-Rāzī, as noted above, for the latter two narrated it from Buraydah. The variants may be set out as follows: Mālik ibn Mighwal and Sufyān: in Abū Dāwūd, Ahmad, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Humaydī, from Imrān, as a *marfū* report. Muhammad ibn Fudayl: in al-Bukhārī, from Imrān, as a *mawqūf* report. Al-Rāzī: in Ibn Mājah, from Buraydah, as a *marfū* report. Hushaym: in Muslim and Ahmad, from Buraydah, as a *mawqūf* report. This version is stronger than al-Rāzī’s narration. There is no need to prefer one version so long as they can be reconciled. Perhaps al-Shabī heard it from both Imrān and Buraydah and narrated it through both routes. (2) Authentic: Recorded by Muslim (2188), al-Tirmidhī (2062), Ibn Abī Shaybah in *al-Musannaf* (23597), and al-Nasāī in *al-Kubrā* (7620), all through Wuhayb, from Ibn Tāwūs, from his father, from Ibn Abbās. The wording in Ibn Abī Shaybah’s *al-Musannaf* is: “The evil eye is real, and if one of you is asked to wash, let him wash.” (3) *Hasan* (sound): Recorded by Ahmad (2473), who said: Abū Ahmad Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from a man, from Jābir, from Ibn Abbās. This chain is weak: this Abū Ahmad made errors when transmitting al-Thawrī’s hadiths, and al-Thawrī’s teacher here is an unidentified man. However, it was also recorded by Ahmad (2676) and al-Hākim in *al-Mustadrak* (7498), through Sufyān, from Duwayd: Ismāīl ibn Thawbān narrated to me, from Jābir ibn Zayd, from Ibn Abbās. This is a good chain. Duwayd was somewhat weak, according to al-Bukhārī and Abū Dāwūd. Abū Hātim called him “a *shaykh*.” Ibn Hibbān said, “His hadiths are sound when the person transmitting from him is trustworthy.” End quote. Here the person transmitting from him is Sufyān, whose strength of memory and meticulousness are beyond question. Al-Hākim said, “This hadith has an authentic chain.” Shaykh al-Albānī graded it *hasan* in some of his works, which is the correct judgment. It is also supported by a hadith from Alī (may Allah be pleased with him).
