“O Messenger of Allah, will you attend to Sahl ibn Hunayf? By Allah, he cannot raise his head.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Do you suspect anyone of having caused this?” They replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah. Āmir ibn Rabī‘ah passed by him while he was bathing and said, ‘By Allah, never have I seen anything like what I have seen today—not even the skin of a maiden kept in seclusion.’” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Āmir ibn Rabī‘ah, became angry with him, and said, “Why should one of you kill his brother? Why did you not ask Allah to bless him? Wash for him.” Āmir therefore washed for him, and Sahl departed with the caravan.
Ibn Shihāb said: “The washing procedure that we found our scholars following was as follows: The man who had cast the evil eye upon his companion would be brought a vessel containing water, which would be held up for him above the ground. He would put his right hand into the water and pour water over his face once, letting it fall into the vessel. He would then put his left hand into the water and wash his right hand once over the vessel. Next, he would put his right hand into the water and wash his left hand up to the elbow once over the vessel. He would then put both hands into the water and wash his chest once over the vessel. Next, he would put his left hand into the water, scoop some up, and pour it once over the back of his right hand, letting it fall into the vessel. He would then put his left hand into the water and pour it once over his right elbow into the vessel while bending his arm toward his neck. He would do the same to his left elbow. He would then do the same to the top of his right foot, beginning at the bases of the toes, and likewise to the left foot. Next, he would put his left hand into the water and pour it over the back of his right knee, then do the same to the left knee. He would then dip the right inner edge of his waist-wrapper into the water. The man holding the vessel would then rise with it and pour it over the back of his right knee. The man holding the vessel would then rise with it and pour it over the head of the person affected by the evil eye from behind, after which he would overturn the vessel face down on the ground behind him.” (1)
Yūnus was among those most familiar with al-Zuhrī’s views. Here, he attributed the description of the washing procedure to al-Zuhrī himself, and Ibn Abī Dhi’b followed him in this in al-Musannaf.
