- The hadith of Abū Umāmah As‘ad ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf (may Allah have mercy on him).
Abū Umāmah As‘ad ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf reported: Āmir ibn Rabī‘ah passed by Sahl ibn Hunayf while he was bathing and said, “Never have I seen anything like what I have seen today—not even the skin of a maiden kept in seclusion.” It was not long before Sahl collapsed. He was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was told, “Come to Sahl’s aid; he lies stricken.” He asked, “Whom do you suspect of causing this?” They replied, “Āmir ibn Rabī‘ah.” He said, “Why should one of you kill his brother? If any of you sees something in his brother that pleases him, let him invoke Allah’s blessing upon him.” He then called for water and instructed Āmir to perform ablution, washing his face, his hands up to the elbows, his knees, and the inner edge of his wrap, and ordered him to pour the water over Sahl. Sufyān said, “Ma‘mar reported from al-Zuhrī: ‘And he ordered that the vessel be overturned behind him.’”
In another version: He then ordered Āmir to wash himself for Sahl. Āmir washed his face, the backs of his hands, his elbows, his chest, the inner edge of his wrap, his knees, and the outer surfaces of the ends of his feet in the vessel. He then ordered that the water be poured over Sahl’s head and that the vessel be overturned behind him. I believe he also said, “He ordered him to take several sips from it.” He then ordered him to rise, and he departed with the caravan. (1)
Al-Tabarānī also transmitted it through Yūnus ibn Yazīd, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf al-Ansārī: Āmir ibn Rabī‘ah al-‘Adawī passed by Sahl while he was bathing at al-Kharrār and said, “By Allah, never have I seen anything like what I have seen today—not even the skin of a maiden kept in seclusion.” Sahl collapsed and was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was told:
