- The hadith of Sahl ibn Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him).
Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf reported that his father told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and they traveled with him toward Mecca. When they reached the ravine of al-Kharrār at al-Juhfah, Sahl ibn Hunayf bathed. He was fair-skinned, with a handsome physique and fine complexion. Āmir ibn Rabīah, a member of Banū Adī ibn Ka'b, saw him bathing and said, “Never have I seen anything like what I have seen today—not even the skin of a maiden kept in seclusion.” Sahl then collapsed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was approached and told, “O Messenger of Allah, will you attend to Sahl? By Allah, he cannot raise his head and has not regained consciousness.” He asked, “Do you suspect anyone in his case?” They replied, “Āmir ibn Rabīah looked at him.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Āmir, angrily rebuked him, and said, “Why should one of you kill his brother? When you saw something that pleased you, why did you not invoke Allah’s blessing upon it?” He then said, “Wash yourself for him.” Āmir washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, the ends of his feet, and the inner edge of his wrap into a bowl. That water was then poured over Sahl: a man poured it over his head and back from behind, after which the bowl was overturned behind him. This was done, and Sahl departed with the others, entirely well.
In another version: He ordered Āmir to wash his face in the water, the ends of his hands, his knees, and the ends of his feet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then took the two sides of Āmir’s wrap and its inner edge and immersed them in the water. He then emptied the vessel over Sahl’s head and overturned it behind him, whereupon Sahl recovered and had nothing wrong with him. (1)
