al-Ayn HaqqMuhammad ibn Abd al-Mu'ti
  • A person does not envy himself, but he may cast the evil eye upon himself.
  • Envy arises only from a malicious, rancorous soul. The evil eye, however, may be cast by a righteous man merely because he admires something, without wishing for it to be taken away. This is what happened with Āmir—may Allah be pleased with him—for he was among the earliest Muslims and took part in Badr. The virtue of being a Companion is surely sufficient—how excellent and noble it is!

Among those who distinguished between the evil eye and envy were Ibn al-Jawzī, al-Nawawī, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalānī, and others—may Allah have mercy upon them all. (1)
