Some of them, upon hearing the patient cry, repeat Allah Most High’s words: “Taste! Indeed, you are the mighty, the noble!” [Al-Dukhān: 49] Others recite this while beating the possessed person.
-
Some write for the patient the disjointed letters that open certain surahs of the Noble Quran, such as Allah Most High’s words: Kāf Hā Yā Ayn Sād; Hā Mīm Ayn Sīn Qāf; Alif Lām Rā; Alif Lām Mīm; Alif Lām Mīm Sād; Tā Sīn; and Tā Sīn Mīm—and so forth. None knows their interpretation except Allah, and they should not be discussed without knowledge.
-
Some pour cold water over the patient’s head while reciting: “Then pour over his head the torment of scalding water.” [Al-Dukhān: 48]
-
Some pour water over the patient while reciting: “Strike the ground with your foot: here is cool water for washing and drinking.” [Surah Sād, verse 42]
This is compound ignorance. Comparable to it is the practice of people who, at the inauguration of projects or when honoring certain men, recite Allah Most High’s words: “And say, ‘Act, for Allah will see your deeds, as will His Messenger and the believers. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the visible, and He will inform you of what you used to do.’” [Al-Tawbah: 105]
The verse is a threat and warning from Allah Most High to the hypocrites. It contains no praise of people’s work, nor any commendation of those who distinguish themselves or of highly skilled and accomplished people!
Ibn Jarīr al-Tabarī (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Allah Most High says to His Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): Say, O Muhammad, to those who admitted their sins to you—those who stayed behind instead of joining you in jihad: Act for Allah in ways that please Him, by obeying Him and fulfilling His obligations. Allah will see your deeds, and so will His Messenger. That is, if you act, Allah will see your deeds, and His Messenger will see them. And the believers will see them in this world. Then you will be returned on the Day of Resurrection to the Knower of the unseen and the visible, who knows what you conceal and what you disclose; nothing concerning your inward or outward affairs is hidden from Him. And He will inform you of what you used to do. That is, He will tell you what you used to do, which of it was sincere and which
