1 – ʿAṭāʾ reports from his father, from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ: “The Prophet ﷺ came to visit me while I was ill. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, may I bequeath all my wealth?’ He replied, ‘No.’ I asked, ‘Then half of it?’ He said, ‘No.’ I continued, ‘Then a third of it?’ He answered, ‘A third—and a third is much. Do not leave your family dependent on the charity of other people.’
In another wording: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Saʿd to visit him and asked, ‘Have you made a bequest?’ Saʿd replied, ‘Yes, I have bequeathed all my property.’ The Prophet ﷺ kept reducing the amount until he said, ‘A third, and a third is a lot.’
And in yet another narration, ʿAṭāʾ relates from his father, from his grandfather, from Saʿd: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to see me while I was ill. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, may I bequeath all my wealth?’ He said, ‘No.’ I asked, ‘Then half of it?’ He said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Then a third?’ He replied, ‘A third—and a third is much. If you leave your heirs well-provided, that is better than leaving them poor and begging from people.’”
