3 – Hammad narrated from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): ʿUmar entered upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet was suffering from an illness. He found him lying on a coarse Qatwani cloak and resting his head on a woollen cushion stuffed with idhkhir (a fragrant desert grass). ʿUmar exclaimed, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Chosroes and Caesar recline on silk brocade, yet you lie on this!” The Prophet replied, “O ʿUmar, are you not content that they have this world while the Hereafter is ours?” ʿUmar then touched him and realised that he was burning with a high fever. He said, “Do you suffer such a fever while you are the Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet answered, “The people most severely tried in this ummah are its Prophet, then the next best, and then those after them. The same was the case with the Prophets before you and with their peoples.”
