4 – ʿAlqamah reports, on the authority of Ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said:

“We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said to his Companions, ‘Rise; let us visit our Jewish neighbor who is ill.’ He entered the house and found the young man in the throes of death. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, ‘Do you testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?’ The youth looked toward his father, but his father remained silent. The Prophet ﷺ repeated, ‘Do you testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?’ Again the youth looked at his father, whereupon the father said, ‘Bear witness to him.’ The young man then declared, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Praise be to Allah, who has saved a soul from the Fire through me.’

In another narration he told his Companions one day, ‘Rise; let us visit our Jewish neighbor who is ill.’ They found him at the point of death. The Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ The Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?’ The man looked toward his father. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated the question, and the narrator described the episode three times in this manner until the man said, ‘I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, ‘Praise be to Allah, who has rescued through me a soul from the Fire.’”
