24 – ʿAlqamah narrated—from Ibn Buraydah, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him)—that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“A man came to him asking to be provided with a mount. He replied, ‘I have nothing on which to carry you, but I can direct you to someone who will. Go to the cemetery of such-and-such a clan; there you will find a young man from the Ansar practicing spear-throwing with some companions of his, and he owns a camel. Ask him to let you ride, for he will do so.’

The man went and indeed found him throwing spears with his friends, so he conveyed to him the words of the Prophet ﷺ. The youth adjured him by Allah: ‘Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ truly say this?’ The man swore it to him twice—or three times—whereupon the youth mounted him. They then passed by the Prophet ﷺ, and the man related to him what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Go on your way; whoever directs others to a good deed is like the one who performs it.’

Another wording states: A man came seeking a mount, and he said, ‘By Allah, I possess nothing on which to carry you. But go to the cemetery of such-and-such a clan; you will find there a young man from the Ansar practicing spear-throwing with his companions. Ask him to let you ride, for he will do so.’ The man went until he reached the cemetery indicated by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told the young man the story. The youth put him under oath, and he replied, ‘By Him besides whom there is no god, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you.’ So he gave him one of his camels, and the man took it and came to the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Go on your way, for the one who points others to good is like the one who does it.’
