Musnad Abi Hanifah Riwayat al-HaskafiAbu Hanifa

29 – ʿAlqamah related, on the authority of Sulaymān ibn Buraydah, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“We had forbidden you to visit graves, but permission has now been granted to Muhammad ﷺ to visit his mother’s grave; therefore visit them, yet do not speak anything improper. We had also forbidden you to keep the meat of the sacrificial animals for more than three days; we only did so that those of means might extend generosity to your poor. Allah has now enlarged your provision, so eat of it and store some. And we had forbidden you to drink from the ḥantam and the muzaffat.”

In another wording: “(We likewise forbade) the naqīr and the dubbaʾ. Drink, then, from any vessel you wish, for the vessel itself neither makes a thing lawful nor unlawful; and do not drink anything intoxicating.”

In yet another wording he said: “We had prohibited you from three things: visiting graves—so visit them; keeping the meat of the sacrificial animals beyond three days—so keep it and make provisions, for we only forbade you so that the wealthy among you might provide for the poor; and drinking out of the dubbaʾ and the muzaffat—so drink from whatever container you please, for the container itself makes nothing lawful or unlawful. Only, do not drink what intoxicates.”

Another narration, to the same effect, adds: “And (we had forbidden) nabidh in the dubbaʾ, the ḥantam, and the muzaffat. Drink, then, from any vessel, but do not drink what intoxicates.”
