Musnad Abi Hanifah Riwayat al-HaskafiAbu Hanifa

22 – Maʿn narrated from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “Since the day I accepted Islam I have not lied except once. I used to saddle the Prophet’s mount. A camel-attendant from Ṭāʾif came to me and asked, ‘Which riding animal is dearest to the Messenger of Allah?’ I replied, ‘The animal from Ṭāʾif that is bred in Mecca.’ In truth, the Messenger of Allah disliked that kind of mount. When the man brought it, the Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘Who saddled this animal for us?’ They answered, ‘Your camel-attendant.’ He said, ‘Tell Ibn Umm ʿAbd to prepare a mount for us instead.’ So the animal was returned to me.”

Another version states that ʿAbd Allah said: “A man from the people of Ṭāʾif was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. That man then came to me and asked, ‘Which mount does he prefer?’ I replied, ‘The animal from Ṭāʾif that is bred in Mecca.’ The man went out and asked, ‘Whose mount is this?’ He was told, ‘It belongs to the man from Ṭāʾif.’ He said, ‘We have no need of it.’”
