Musnad Abi Hanifah Riwayat al-HaskafiAbu Hanifa

14 – Al-Haytham narrates through Mūsā ibn Kathīr:

ʿUmar once passed by ʿUthmān, who looked downcast, and asked, “What is troubling you?”

ʿUthmān replied, “How could I not be saddened when the bond of marriage between me and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been severed? Only recently the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—my wife—passed away.”

ʿUmar said, “I will marry you to my daughter Hafsa.”

ʿUthmān responded, “Let me first consult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

When the matter reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said to ʿUmar, “Shall I guide you to a son-in-law better for you than ʿUthmān, and guide ʿUthmān to a son-in-law better for him than you?”

He continued, “Give me Hafsa in marriage, and I shall marry my daughter to ʿUthmān.”

And so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arranged it exactly as he said.
