4 – Hammād narrated—from Ibrāhīm—who said: “A shaykh from the people of Madinah informed me, on the authority of Zayd ibn Thābit (may Allah be pleased with him), that he came to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet asked him, ‘Have you married?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Marry, and you will safeguard your chastity even more. Yet do not marry five kinds of women: a shahbarah, a nahbarah, a lahbarah, a haydarah, or a lafūt.’

Zayd said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not understand any of these terms.’ He answered, ‘The shahbarah is the blue-eyed, heavy-set woman; the nahbarah is the tall, emaciated woman; the lahbarah is the elderly woman who has passed her prime; the haydarah is the short, ill-favoured woman; and the lafūt is the woman who already has children from another man.’

Al-Shaybānī said, ‘Abu Ḥanīfah laughed at this ḥadīth for a long time.’
