26 – ʿAbd al-Malik narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (d. 68 AH) that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“On the Day of Resurrection a group of believers will enter the Fire on account of their sins. The idolaters will say to them, ‘What good did your faith do you? Here we are, you and us, suffering together in the same abode!’ Allah—majestic and exalted—will become angry on their behalf and will decree that no one who has ever said lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no god but Allah) remain in the Fire. They will then emerge, having been burned until they are like black embers—except for their faces, for their eyes will not turn blue nor will their faces be darkened.

They will be brought to a river at the gate of Paradise; they will bathe in it, and every trace of trial and harm will vanish. Then they will enter the Garden, and the angel will say to them, ‘You have done well; so enter it to abide forever’ (39:73). In Paradise they will at first be known as ‘the Hell-folk’ (al-Jahannamiyyūn). They will supplicate, and that name will be taken away from them, never to be used again.

When they have departed (the Fire), the disbelievers will cry out, ‘If only we had been Muslims!’—the meaning of Allah’s words: ‘Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims’ (15:2).”
