115 – Alqamah related that Ibn Buraidah transmitted from his father, who said: “We accompanied the Prophet ﷺ in a funeral procession. When he reached his mother’s grave he broke into the most intense weeping, to the point that we feared his very soul would leave his body. We said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what makes you weep?’ He replied, ‘I asked my Lord for permission to visit the grave of Muhammad’s mother, and He granted it to me. I then asked Him for permission to intercede on her behalf, but He refused me.’
In another wording: “The Prophet ﷺ sought permission to visit his mother’s grave and was granted it. He set out, and the Muslims went with him until they drew near the grave. The Muslims stopped, while the Prophet ﷺ went on ahead and remained there a long time. Then his weeping intensified until we feared he would never compose himself. He came back to us still weeping, and ʿUmar said, ‘What has caused you to weep, O Prophet of Allah? May my father and mother be ransomed for you.’ He answered, ‘I asked my Lord for permission to visit my mother’s grave, and He granted it. I then asked Him for permission to intercede, but He denied me. So I wept out of mercy for her, and the Muslims wept out of mercy for the Prophet ﷺ.’
