113 – A man transmitted—from Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah—that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared:
“When the believer is placed in his grave, an angel comes to him, seats him upright, and asks, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He replies, ‘Allah.’ The angel asks, ‘Who is your prophet?’ He answers, ‘Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’ Then he asks, ‘What is your religion?’ and he says, ‘Islam.’ His grave is then expanded for him and he is shown his seat in Paradise.
“But if the deceased is an unbeliever, the angel seats him and asks, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He groans, ‘Ah … I do not know,’ stammering like a bewildered man. The angel asks, ‘Who is your prophet?’ and he says, ‘Ah … I do not know,’ again mumbling in confusion. Then the angel asks, ‘What is your religion?’ and he says, ‘Ah … I do not know.’ His grave is consequently constricted around him and he is shown his seat in the Fire. The angel then strikes him a blow which every creature hears except the two heavy orders—the jinn and humankind.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then recited: “Allah makes firm those who believe with the firm word, in the life of this world and in the Hereafter; Allah lets the wrongdoers stray, and Allah does whatever He wills” (Qur’an 14:27).
