95 – ʿAlqamah reports through Ibn al-Aqmar, from Humrān, who said: “I never met Ibn ʿUmar without finding Humrān sitting nearest to him. One day Ibn ʿUmar said, ‘Humrān, I see you are constant in our company only because you desire good for yourself, are you not?’ He replied, ‘Indeed so, O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.’ Ibn ʿUmar continued, ‘There are two matters I forbid you to do, and one matter I order you to observe, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ command it.’
Humrān asked, ‘What are those three matters, O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān?’ He said:
‘• Do not let death overtake you while you still owe a debt, unless you have left the means for its repayment.
• Do not eavesdrop on the recitation of a verse, for if you do, it will be announced about you on the Day of Resurrection just as you listened—in full requital—and your Lord does not wrong anyone.
• As for the matter I enjoin upon you, just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined upon me: never neglect the two rakʿas before Fajr, for within them lie rich blessings.’”
