Musnad Abi Hanifah Riwayat al-HaskafiAbu Hanifa

83 – Ḥammād narrated from Ibrāhīm, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him): When he returned from Abyssinia he offered salām to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the Prophet was praying, but the Prophet did not reply. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the prayer, Ibn Masʿūd said, “I seek refuge in Allah from His blessing turning into displeasure.” The Prophet ﷺ asked, “And what is that?” He replied, “I greeted you, yet you did not answer me.” The Prophet said, “Prayer so fully occupies a person.” From that day on we never returned anyone’s salām while we were in prayer.
