Musnad Abi Hanifah Riwayat al-HaskafiAbu Hanifa

73 – Hammad narrated, from Mujāhid: He accompanied ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them) on the journey from Mecca to Medina. Along the way, before reaching Medina, Ibn ʿUmar would pray on his mount, signaling the movements with slight gestures, except for the obligatory prayer and the witr; for those two he would dismount. Mujāhid said, “I asked him about praying on his mount while it was facing toward Medina.” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform voluntary prayers on his riding animal, whichever direction it faced, indicating the motions with gestures.”
