72 – Hammad narrated, from Ibrahim, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): He arrived and was told, “ʿUthman has performed the prayer at Mina as four rakʿahs.” He exclaimed, “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return! I prayed two rakʿahs with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, two with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and two with ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him).”

Later he attended the prayer with ʿUthman and prayed four rakʿahs with him. People said to him, “You voiced istirjaʿ and said what you said, yet you have prayed four.” He replied, “The caliphate.” Then he added, “He was the first to complete it as four rakʿahs at Mina.”
