Musnad Abi Hanifah Riwayat al-HaskafiAbu Hanifa

58 – Al-Haytham reported, from Jābir ibn al-Aswad—or al-Aswad ibn Jābir—from his father (may Allah be pleased with him):

Two men performed the noon prayer (ẓuhr) in their homes during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, thinking that the congregation had already prayed. They then came to the mosque and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ still engaged in prayer, so they sat in a corner of the mosque, believing that joining the prayer was no longer permissible for them.

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the prayer and noticed them, he sent for them. They were brought before him, their joints trembling for fear that they had erred. He questioned them, and they related what had happened. He said, “If this occurs, then pray with the people and regard the first prayer as the obligatory one.”

It was said: This ḥadīth has also been transmitted by a group on the authority of Abū Ḥanīfa (may Allah have mercy on him), who reported it from al-Haytham, tracing it back to the Prophet ﷺ.
