40 – Ḥammād narrated from Abū Wāthilah Shaqīq ibn Salamah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “Whenever we prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ we used to say, ‘Peace be upon Allah.’

In one transmission, with an addition from ʿUbādah, we would say, ‘Peace be upon Gabriel and Michael.’ The Prophet ﷺ turned toward us and said: ‘Allah Himself is al-Salām (the Source of Peace). When any of you sits for the tashahhud, let him say: al-taḥiyyātu lillāh wa-ṣ-ṣalawātu wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāt. Al-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā ’n-nabī wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh. Al-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādi ’llāhi ’ṣ-ṣāliḥīn. Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā ’llāh, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh.’

Another version states that they used to say: ‘Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Gabriel, peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Do not say, “Peace be upon al-Salām”; rather say: al-taḥiyyātu lillāh wa-ṣ-ṣalawātu wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāt … to the end of the tashahhud.’

One narration records: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught them al-taḥiyyāt up to the end of the tashahhud.’

In another wording: ‘He taught us.’

And in yet another narration he said: ‘When we prayed with the Prophet ﷺ, after we sat at the end of the prayer we would say, “Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon such-and-such angels whom we would name.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not say that; rather say: al-taḥiyyātu lillāh wa-ṣ-ṣalawātu wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāt.”’
