25 – Musa narrates from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shaddad, from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah — may Allah be pleased with him — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever is praying behind an imam, the imam’s recitation suffices for him.”
In another wording: A man began to recite aloud behind the Prophet ﷺ in the Dhuhr and ʿAsr prayers. Someone nearby motioned to him, telling him to stop. When the prayer ended he said, “Are you forbidding me to recite behind the Prophet ﷺ?” They continued discussing it until the Prophet ﷺ heard. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “Whoever prays behind the imam, the imam’s recitation counts as his recitation.”
A separate narration states: A man recited behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade him.”
Another narration says: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in prayer, and a man recited behind him. When the prayer was finished he asked, “Who among you was reciting behind me?” three times. A man replied, “It was I, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Whoever prays behind the imam, the imam’s recitation counts as his recitation.”
Yet another wording relates: After finishing the Dhuhr and ʿAsr prayers, the Prophet ﷺ asked, “Which of you recited ‘Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High’?” The congregation remained silent until he pressed the question, whereupon one man said, “I did, O Messenger of Allah.” He replied, “I noticed you contending with me, or intruding upon my recitation of the Quran.”
