22 – Abu Sufyan narrated from Yazid ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal:
“He once prayed behind an imam who recited bismillāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm ("In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful") aloud. When the prayer was over he said, ‘O ʿAbd Allah, spare us this favor of yours, for I have prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and behind Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthman (may Allah be pleased with them), and I never heard any of them recite it aloud—and he himself is a Companion.’”
The compiler remarks: “A group have transmitted this hadith from Abu Hanifah, through Abu Sufyan, through Yazid, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), traced back to the Prophet ﷺ. It is said that this is the correct version, because this report is well known from ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal.”
