The Difference Between the Permanence of Paradise and that of Hell (1)
“The difference (2) between the everlasting nature of Paradise and of Hell, according to Revelation and reason.”
(3) As for the evidence from Revelation, it is of several kinds:
First: Allah has stated in many places in His Book that the bliss of Paradise will abide forever, that it will never diminish or cease, and that the people of Paradise will never be expelled from it. Concerning the Fire and its punishment, however, He did not declare that it will endure; He only informed us that its inhabitants will not depart from it.
Second: In a number of verses He has spoken in terms that indicate it is not everlasting.
Third: Nowhere regarding the Fire is there any wording that explicitly affirms perpetuity.
Fourth: Allah has limited the Fire with His words, “wherein they will remain for ages” (Q 78:23) (4), “abiding therein—except as Allah wills” (5), and “as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills” (Q 11:107) (6). These three verses point to a finite term or a matter contingent upon a condition, whereas the description of Paradise is absolute and unrestricted—eternal, neither limited nor conditional.
