Al-Radd ʿalā man qāla bi-fanāʾ al-Janna wa-al-NārIbn Taimiya

He mentioned this while commenting on the Almighty’s words:

“remaining therein for ages” (78:23). (1)

This (2) demonstrates that a venerable elder (3) among the scholars of ḥadith and Sunnah (4) transmits from leading Imams in the same disciplines—such as Sulayman b. Harb, who ranks among the foremost authorities on Sunnah and ḥadith, and Hajjaj b. Minhal—in their statement (5) about Ḥammad b. Salama, despite his lofty standing in knowledge and Sunnah. Ḥammad reports the narration through two avenues: one route goes through Thabit (6) and the other through Ḥumayd (7), both of them conveying it from al-Ḥasan, one of the Successors. Whether he faithfully preserved this report (8) from ʿUmar or failed to do so (9), someone like

(1) Sura an-Naba’ (The Announcement), verse 23. (2) In the original text, the word bayn (“between”) is struck through and noted in the margin, as recorded. (3) That is, Abd ibn Humayd. (4) Here al-sunnah is contrasted with bid’ah (innovation), since a scholar may be a hadith specialist yet still an innovator; accordingly, a scholar is praised when he unites both qualities: engagement with the Prophet’s hadith and adherence to the creed of the people of truth without innovation. See Fatāwā Ibn al-Ṣalāh 1:213. (5) Under this word the original margin contains the term balagh (“it reached”), indicating that this copy was collated against its exemplar. (6) Thābit al-Bannānī, a reliable and devout scholar of the fourth century AH; he died in the [twenties of that century] at the age of eighty-six. (Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb 1:115) (7) Ḥumayd b. Abī Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, a trustworthy mudallis of the fifth century AH; he died in 243 AH while standing in prayer, at the age of seventy-five. (Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb 1:202) (8) In the original the word appears as hifz (“he preserves”), likely before the addition of hadha (“this”) during collation with the source; hadha was appended after hifz and marked as an insertion with the correction sign sahh. (9) In the main text it is given as yahfaz (“he preserves”), again likely prior to the insertion of hadha, since with hadha present the sense would not suit that vocalization. In the original margin opposite yahfaz is the note yahfazuhu, indicating its occurrence in another copy.
