[Section Four: My Method in Editing the Book and Annotating It]
The process may be summed up in the following points:
First:
I transcribed the text, adhering to modern spelling conventions and punctuation, such as commas, question marks, and quotation marks.
Second:
I established and vocalized the text by collating it with the manuscript copy and recording the most important variant readings in the footnotes.
Third:
I returned to some of the sources from which the author quoted, whether verbatim or with modification.
Fourth:
I traced the ḥadiths and reports back to their original collections as far as possible; regarding their grading, I have exerted every effort while relying on the assessments of the leading authorities in this discipline.
Fifth:
I supplied commentary on certain issues that required it.
Sixth:
I numbered the verses of the Quran.
Seventh:
I prepared the following indices:
- An index of Quranic verses.
- An index of prophetic ḥadiths and reports, arranged alphabetically.
- An index of personal names.
- An index of sects and tribes.
- An index of the book titles mentioned in the treatise.
- An index of the references and sources consulted.
- A subject index.
