Al-Radd ʿalā man qāla bi-fanāʾ al-Janna wa-al-NārIbn Taimiya

and the charge of innovation is likewise rejected. In this connection the distinguished Ibn al-Qayyim says: “Your assertion that it is one of the doctrines of the people of innovation is the remark of someone who has no familiarity with the views of mankind, their opinions, and the differences among them….” ⦗1⦘

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān—may Allah preserve him—adds: “…At most it may be called a mistaken statement or an unsound view; it is not to be labeled bidʿah (innovation). My intention is not to defend this opinion, but to clarify that it is not an innovation and that the definition of bidʿah does not apply to it, for it is one of the old questions ⦗2⦘ over which disagreement existed before Ibn Taymiyyah.”

Fifth: Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah have mercy on him—examined the proofs for the everlastingness and permanence of Paradise, as well as those for the Fire and its permanence. He observed that some of the evidences concerning the Fire do not state its eternity outright; rather, they leave the matter to Allah’s will and what He intends for His servants, while other texts limit it with a qualifying clause, as in His words:

“The Fire shall be your abode, wherein you will dwell forever—except as Allah wills. Surely your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.” ⦗3⦘

and His words:

“But as for those who are wretched, they will be in the Fire; in it they shall have sighing and moaning. They will remain therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Surely your Lord does whatever He wills.” ⦗4⦘

and His words:

“They will remain therein for ages.” ⦗5⦘

Accordingly, he regarded these texts as suitable qualifiers for the unqualified proofs that speak of unending duration, holding that confining the absolute text in this way reconciles the evidences and is therefore preferable. The fact that these qualifying texts are fewer in number than those affirming perpetual existence is of no consequence, for what matters is their authenticity, and it did not

والتبديع مردود عليه وفي هذا المعنى يقول العلامة ابن القيم "فقولكم إنه من أقوال أهل البدع كلام من لا خبرة له بمقالات بني آدم وآرائهم واختلافهم.."
