Likewise, another valid point is that disputes among believers can only be settled by the Quran and Sunnah, even if one of the disputants knows through reason what he asserts. For even the strongest intellects differ and vary, and what is unknown is often confused with what is rationally established. Disputes therefore cannot be settled by the statements or rational judgments of any particular individual. Rather, they are settled by the Book sent down from heaven and the Messenger sent by Allah, who is protected from error in what he conveys from Allah Most High. Thus, those groups that abandon adherence to the Quran and Sunnah fall into division and disagreement:
“They will continue to differ, {118} except those upon whom your Lord has mercy.” [Hūd 118–119]
Those who receive His mercy are the people of faith and the Quran.
Another valid point is that detailed knowledge of Allah through His names and attributes can only be learned from the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him: either through what he reports, or through his reports together with his drawing attention to and pointing out rational proofs. Hence they say, “We describe Allah only as He has described Himself or as His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, has described Him.” Allah Most High says:
“Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of might, far above what they ascribe to Him! {180} And peace be upon the messengers. {181} And all praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds. {182}” [al-Sāffāt 180–182]
