affirms some aspect of the truth and holds fast to it, has nevertheless denied another aspect of the truth and thus contradicted himself. Most people’s minds fall short of contemplating this, for each sees himself as either affirming a truth while saying something that contradicts it, or affirming a truth while denying another truth. Yet contradiction between two assertions is untenable, and denying the truth is untenable. As for the plain truth, he does not think his heart capable of recognizing it, just as he cannot fix his gaze on the sun’s radiance—indeed, just as a bat cannot see the sunlight.
Allah Most High has said:
“For it is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts within the breasts that are blind. (46)” [al-Hajj: 46].
The purpose here is to demonstrate the contradictions of the Dahriyya and the invalidity of their argument.
