what others intend through the sounds they make, which may be called their speech, as Solomon, peace be upon him, said:
“O people, we have been taught the speech of birds.” [al-Naml 16]
Allah—glorified and exalted is He—also relates the ant’s words:
“O ants, enter your dwellings lest Solomon and his soldiers crush you without realizing it.” (18) [al-Naml 18]
The ant thus addressed the other ants with words containing a command and a warning, and Solomon, peace be upon him, understood what she said:
“So he smiled, amused at her words, and said, ‘My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You; and admit me, by Your mercy, among Your righteous servants.’” (19) [al-Naml 19]
He also addressed the hoopoe, and it addressed him in the words Allah relates, when the hoopoe said to him:
“I have learned what you have not learned, and I have come to you from Sheba with certain news. (22) I found a woman ruling over them, who has been given of all things and possesses a magnificent throne. (23) I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah. Satan has made their deeds seem fair to them and barred them from the way, so they are not guided, (24) so that they do not prostrate to Allah, who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and the earth and knows what you conceal and what you reveal. (25) Allah—there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Mighty Throne.” (26)
He said, “We shall see whether you have spoken the truth or are among the liars. (27) Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them, then withdraw from them and see what response they make.” (28) [al-Naml 22–28]
Indeed, He—glorified and exalted is He—even causes inanimate things to speak with sounds understood by those human beings who can understand them, as the Most High said concerning David, peace be upon him:
“O mountains, echo Allah’s praises with him, and you birds as well.” [Saba’ 10]
And the Most High said:
“We subjected the mountains to glorify Us with him in the evening and at sunrise.” (18) [Sād 18]
