Ahmad said: ‘The Throne is a seat, and every royal seat is called a throne.’ He said: Know that mention of the Throne is well known among the Arabs, both before Islam and since its advent. Umayyah ibn Abī al-Salt said:

‘Glorify Allah, for He is worthy of glory;
Our Lord in heaven is great,
In the highest edifice—He who preceded mankind
And fashioned above heaven a throne,
Long, beyond the reach of any eye;
Beneath it one sees the angels, their necks inclined.’
