Bayān Talbīs al-JahmiyyaIbn Taimiya

As for the rational argument, the actions we have been enjoined to perform fall into two categories. The first comprises those whose underlying wisdom we can broadly understand through reason, such as prayer, zakat, and fasting. Prayer expresses humility and supplication before the Creator; zakat is kindness to those in need; and fasting subdues the self. The second comprises those whose underlying wisdom we do not understand, such as the rites of hajj: we do not understand the wisdom behind stoning the pillars or going between al-Safā and al-Marwah. Scholars of rigorous inquiry agree that, just as it is fitting for the All-Wise, Most High, to command His servants to perform the first type, so too is it fitting for Him to command them to perform the second.
