Al-Rāzī said:

“Their opponents adduced a Quranic verse, a prophetic report, and rational argument as evidence.

The Quranic evidence has two aspects. The first is Allah’s statement concerning the ambiguous verses:

‘No one knows its interpretation except Allah.’ [Āl ʿImrān 7]

A pause here is obligatory; the evidence for this will follow, if Allah Most High wills. The second is the disconnected letters mentioned at the beginnings of the surahs.

As for the prophetic report, it is his saying, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: ‘There is knowledge that is, as it were, concealed, known only to those who know Allah. When they speak of it, those heedless of Allah reject it.’
