Bayān Talbīs al-JahmiyyaIbn Taimiya

One who is Wise and All-Aware (1).” [Hūd 1]

What cannot be understood has neither been perfected nor set out in detail.

The twenty-third is His saying, Most High:

“These are the verses of the wise Book (1).” [Yūnus 1]

And His saying, Most High:

“These are the verses of the Quran and a clear Book (1).” [al-Naml 1]

And His saying, Most High:

“These are the verses of the Book and a clear Quran (1).” [al-Hijr 1]

And His saying, Most High:

“Alif Lām Mīm (1). These are the verses of the wise Book (2).” [Luqmān 1–2]

And His saying, Most High:

“This We recite to you of the signs and the wise Reminder (58).” [Āl ʿImrān 58]

The word hakīm (“wise”) has the morphological form faʿīl. Whether it carries the active meaning, “that which judges,” or the passive meaning, “that which has been perfected,” it can neither judge nor be perfected unless it has a meaning that can be understood and known. Otherwise, words whose meaning no one can understand are neither perfected, nor capable of judging, nor a source to which judgment can be referred.

The twenty-fourth is His saying, Most High:

“Then whoever disputes with you concerning him after knowledge has come to you” [Āl ʿImrān 61].

What came to him was the Quran. It constitutes knowledge only if it contains knowledge through which one can learn what it explains. Words whose meaning no one can understand are not knowledge and do not convey knowledge
