‘Abd al-Rahmān—or O Ibn ‘Umar—what did you hear the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say about the private conversation?’ He replied, ‘I heard the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: “The believer draws near to his Lord until He places His shelter over him and makes him acknowledge his sins: ‘Do you acknowledge such-and-such a sin?’ He says, ‘I acknowledge it, my Lord; I acknowledge it, my Lord’—saying it twice. He then says, ‘I concealed them in this world, and I forgive them for you today.’ Then he is given the record of his good deeds. As for the disbelievers and hypocrites, it will be proclaimed concerning them before all creation: ‘These are the ones who lied against their Lord.’ [Hūd 18]”’”
Another wording reads: “Allah brings the believer close, places His shelter over him, and conceals him. He says, ‘Do you acknowledge such-and-such a sin? And do you acknowledge such-and-such a sin?’ He replies, ‘Yes, my Lord.’ Then, once He has made him acknowledge his sins and he believes himself doomed, He says, ‘I concealed them for you in this world, and I forgive them for you today.’ He is then given the book of his good deeds. As for the disbeliever and the hypocrite, ‘The witnesses will say, “These are the ones who lied against their Lord. Surely Allah’s curse is upon the wrongdoers.”’ (18) [Hūd 18]”
The wording of the hadith is with the letter nūn. As for the wording he mentioned from some narrators, ‘His shoulder,’ this is a scribal error by scholarly consensus, as he himself stated. Such a thing needs no interpretation. But if it is known that a wording is a fabrication
